Gabriel Akre
In my sculpture, I am inspired by the Classical, Renaissance, and French academic periods in art history. I use the human figure as my subject and my work aims to capture that life-giving quality that exists between Creator and creation. I endeavor to capture an individual person undergoing a unique, yet universal, human experience. I do this by working from life and actively studying expression and emotion. I believe that the human body reveals the human soul, therefore I observe from nature the infinite varieties within each individual. The call of the artist is to partake, in some small sense, in the creation process of God. By creating a beautiful work of art, we have the singular opportunity to experience closeness to Him, to be like Him, to imitate Him. In the end, very simply, I hope my work will be an encounter with beauty for many.
